As an employment and assistance worker you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives. You will provide information on housing and employment as well as offer services for people with disabilities.
Helping people become financially independent
The Ministry of Social Development is committed to providing a fair, caring and sustainable income assistance system for British Columbians who are most in need. In this role, you will help by meeting directly with people who are struggling with barriers or who are in crisis, and then assess and authorize the income assistance programs and services that can help them.
You will provide services to, and interact with, people from all walks of life-some of whom may have mental health issues, substance abuse issues, multiple barriers to employment, physical disabilities and/or language issues. Naturally, people may be distraught when applying for income assistance and their behaviour may be affected by their particular issue.
As an Employment and Assistance Worker, you will be on the front line and must be able to listen, ask the right questions, and work effectively in an environment that requires sensitivity, understanding and empathy while at the same time ensuring legislation and policy are correctly and equitably applied in all situations. It's a challenging and very rewarding career.
The information provided on these pages will help you determine if you have the qualifications, skills and abilities to be effective in the employment and assistance worker role. When we are actively recruiting for Employment Assistance Workers we will post on our employment opportunities site at www.employment.gov.bc.ca. In the meantime, we invite you to create a profile and set up job search agents to inform you of positions via email as they become available.
