The program recruits motivated recent technical school graduates and provides them with supervised work experience, while continually increasing their responsibilities to a professional level. All TELP’s are assigned to work with experienced mentors who promote and accelerate their development. Trainees are exposed to a variety of technical problems, solutions and techniques that provide a solid career foundation for the future. Job opportunitiesBridge Area Manager Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the position administers the bridge maintenance program for an assigned portion of an area in a district to ensure safety and convenience of the motoring public. The Bridge Area Manager oversees audits and monitors bridge maintenance programs to ensure the work carried out by contractors is in accordance with the contractual agreement; and performs other related duties as required including supervising junior area supervisors and technical crews; may act for Operations Manager during absences.
Bridge Project Supervisor Assistant The principal function of this position is to assist the Bridge Construction Project Supervisors in the inspection and administration of bridge construction contracts. Duties could include: assisting in the management of bridge construction work; inspection of bridge construction work; surveying for bridge construction work; administering contracts for bridge construction work; direct construction on day labour projects; preparing inspection and construction reports; and preparing construction contract documents, quantity take offs, cost estimates and progress reports. You must be willing and able to work outside during periods of inclement weather, at remote locations and/or at heights and rough terrain. You must also work extended schedules and shifts as determined by on-site construction activities. This position is a "field" position and may require you to travel and/or relocate depending on the location of the work. Commercial Transport Enforcement Officer The Commercial Vehicle and Safety Enforcement branch plays a key role in the protection of highway infrastructure, and ultimately the safety of highway users. Commercial Transport Enforcement Officers educate and enforce provisions of pursuant regulations, programs and standards that govern the road transportation industry. They monitor roadways, and conduct mechanical and safety checks on commercial vehicles and drivers at stationary inspection stations and based out of a vehicle inspection station. Commercial Transport Enforcement Officers must interpret legislation, regulations, policies and standards, to monitor and identify compliance and either resolve these issues or take enforcement action. Decisions may significantly impact others and businesses so team members must exhibit sound judgement and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of associations, jurisdictions, carriers, enforcement agencies and the public. Applicants must be willing to work in all weather conditions. Commercial Transport Enforcement Officers work regularly around moving vehicles and equipment, and work under pressure while displaying a polite and tactful manner to sometimes challenging clients.
Development Approvals Technician In this position, you will be responsible for making recommendations for approval of land use proposals submitted by developers and the general public. This includes: answering questions and providing information; one on one client interaction; conducting site inspections; providing expert technical advice in evaluating the impact of proposed developments; and reviewing appeals.
Engineering Aides – Field Services This position offers team participation in overseeing highway construction projects by ensuring contractors provide a quality product. You will inspect work, conduct quality management audits, and material testing using the latest technology, including robotic survey equipment. As a ‘mobile’ employee you will work and live throughout the province. As compensation for offsetting the costs for working as a mobile employee, you will be paid up to $1065/month for living allowance. A typical working season involves 8-9 months working in remote locations with the potential of 3-4 months of paid leave.
Electronics Technician Assistant - Weather Network Programs Working in the Snow Avalanche and Weather Programs branch, you will assist in monitoring, maintaining and operating the Remote Weather Network and the Environmental Sensing Network throughout the entire province. You will also assist in determining local and provincial needs and configuring specialized software and equipment. The position will also require assisting with installations, maintenance and repairs to remote electronic stations that are used to support the ministry highway system business requirements. You will be required to frequently work outdoors possibly in harsh mountain environments and will require a high level of physical fitness. You must travel safely by foot, ski/snow board through mountainous terrain; and drive or travel in helicopters, in variable conditions. Geomatics Survey Technician Reporting to the Geomatics Survey Project Supervisor, the function of the Geomatics Survey Technician is to support, and participate with, senior technical specialists in the delivery of highway engineering services that meet project requirement and ministry specification. You will operate precision GPS and survey instruments, related software and survey computations. The type of work ranges from creative/innovative, resulting from the complexities which arise from assessing and implementing new technologies to deliver 3D base mapping that meet ministry standards, to judgmental work which follows established policies, procedures and engineering practice.
Geotechnical Assistant Under limited direction of the Regional Gravel Manager, the primary purpose of this position is to assist in the planning, direction and management of the regional gravel management program and to provide expert advice to regional, district and headquarters staff, including other agencies, ministries and private organizations. This position functions in a dynamic and changing environment which involves supporting major project engineering and supplying expertise to consultant design teams working for the ministry. The Gravel Management Technician is responsible for aggregate resource data necessary for resource management, project planning, construction feasibility, environmental protection and land use applications.
Highway Design Technician The Highway Design Technician will carry out aspects of highway design that range from corridor identification and route feasibility analysis to detailed computerized designs of tow land and multi-lane facilities in both rural and urban highways, quantity estimates and project costs. You will also review detailed design work done by consultants at varying stages of completion to ensure accuracy and compliance to standards and providing suggestion on remedial action required to attain compliance.
Project Management Technician In this position, you will provide support to the Regional Manager, Project Delivery and individual Project Managers as they plan, organize and monitor the delivery of assigned projects. The projects the group delivers are wide ranging in scope and complexity and success depends upon teamwork and leadership. Project Management is a dynamic environment where many days your planned activities are replaced by emerging issues. Ideal candidates will have strong organizational skills, flexibility and be results oriented.
District Operations Under the direction of the Operations Manager, this position plans, organizes and implements the delivery of various road rehabilitation and improvement projects. You will also be involved in administering road and bridge maintenance contracts for an assigned portion of a district to monitor the contractor's requirement to adhere to the terms and conditions of the contract. The District Operations Manager, Roads, also identifies and resolves local highway operations issues through provision of customer service delivery within assigned area.
IT Analyst The Regional Business Analyst will provide front line IT support for line of business applications and platforms in use by our clients as well as mainstream data analysis to identify potential infrastructure issues and appropriate solutions. In addition to this, the analyst will work closely with the Manager of Systems Services to provide consultation, curriculum development and delivery, website development and maintenance, web application development and maintenance, procurement, and film production services.
